چکیده

The application of melt spinning processes for the production of cellulosic fibres would be a significant sign of progress for economic and environmental reasons. A process for melt spinning of trimethyl-silycellulose (TMSC) was developed. Bis(trimethyl-)silylcarbamate (BSC) was found to be excellent for the silylation of cellulose due to good swelling and penetration into cellulose. The synthesis could be performed without catalyst and absolutely salt free. For this reason silylcellulose had superior melt processing properties and could be melt spun without any additives at temperatures below 250°C with spinning speeds up to 1000m/min. Pure cellulosic fibres were obtained after hydrolysis of the silylgroups. Hexamethy-disiloxane formed could be recycled by catalysed insertion of isocyanuric acid which was received by thermal decomposition of urea. The resulting fibres properties were close to tyre cord yarns. All process chemicals were recycled. It was Thought that the process is still on a laboratory scale so that there is potential for launching the pilot plant scale due to the high productivity of the process. __________________________________________________

Effects of Surfactants on the Preparation of Nanocellulose-PLA Composites

Thermoplastic composite materials containing wood fibers are gaining increasing interest in the manufacturing industry. One approach is to use nano- or micro-size cellulosic fibrils as additives and to improve the mechanical properties obtainable with only small fibril loadings by exploiting the high aspect ratio and surface area of nanocellulose. In this study, we used four different wood cell...

A Method of Forming Composite Structures Using In Situ-Formed Liquid Crystal Polymer Fibers in a Thermoplastic Matrix

A new high speed and potentially economical method of creating a composite material and structures therefrom is tested. The method consists of spinning composite fibers from a melt blend of a thermoplastic with a liquid crystal polymer (LCP). Discontinuous fibrils of the LCP are formed in situ during the spinning process. These composite fibers are aligned and placed in a mold and heated to mel...

Conversion of cellulosic materials into glycolipid biosurfactants, mannosylerythritol lipids, by Pseudozyma spp. under SHF and SSF processes

BACKGROUND Mannosylerythritol lipids (MEL) are glycolipids with unique biosurfactant properties and are produced by Pseudozyma spp. from different substrates, preferably vegetable oils, but also sugars, glycerol or hydrocarbons. However, solvent intensive downstream processing and the relatively high prices of raw materials currently used for MEL production are drawbacks in its sustainable comm...
